Lycium horridum is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium horridum is an upright, rigid and mostly heavily branched, diocese shrub that reaches heights of 0.2 to 1.8 m. The leaves are succulent and hairless, they are 7 to 12 mm long and 1.5 to 3 mm wide.

The flowers are four or five-fold. The calyx is tubular, the calyx tube reaches a length of 3 to 3.5 mm and is provided with 0.5 to 0.8 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is hemispherical or half ovoid. It is colored white and has dark purple spots at the base of the purple corolla lobes. The corolla tube is 7 to 9 mm long, the corolla lobes reach a length of 1.5 to 2 mm. The stamens are hairy tomentose at the base.

The fruit is an egg-shaped, red berry that is 4 to 6 mm long and 3 to 3.5 mm wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Occurrence

The species is widespread on the African continent and occurs there in South Africa , Botswana , Namibia and Zimbabwe .

Systematics

Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium afrum , Lycium arenicola , Lycium schizocalyx , Lycium cinereum and Lycium ferocissimum .
