Lycium Ferocissimum is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
description
Lycium Ferocissimum is a 2 to 3 m high, stiff, with spines reinforced shrub . Its leaves are succulent , hairless and 12 to 24 mm long and 5 to 7 mm wide.
The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is tubular, the calyx tube has a length of 5 to 7 mm and is covered with 1 to 1.5 mm long calyx tips. The crown is white, the veins are purple and the corolla lobes are pale purple with a basal purple point. The base of the stamens is densely tomentose.
The fruit is a red, broadly ovoid or spherical berry that is 8 to 10 mm long and wide.
Occurrence
The species is widespread on the African continent and occurs there in South Africa in the provinces of Eastern Cape , Western Cape , Free State , KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga , as well as in Morocco , Tunisia and Lesotho .
Systematics
Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium afrum , Lycium arenicola , Lycium schizocalyx , Lycium cinereum and Lycium horridum .
