Lycium schizocalyx is a plant species from the genus of the buckthorn ( Lycium ) inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae).
description
Lycium schizocalyx is a 0.7 to 1.7 m high, rigidly upright growing and heavily branched shrub . The leaves are weakly succulent and hairless. They are 9 to 15 mm long and 1 to 2 mm wide.
The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is broad, trumpet-shaped and hairless. The calyx tube reaches a length of 5 to 7 mm, the calyx lobes are 3 to 4 mm long. The crown is creamy white, the veins and the corolla lobes are colored purple. The corolla tube is 6 to 8 mm long and is covered with 3 to 3.5 mm long corolla lobes. The base of the stamens is hairy tomentose.
The fruit is a red, spherical berry with a diameter of 6 to 7 mm.
Occurrence
The species is widespread on the African continent and occurs there in South Africa in the provinces of the Western Cape , Eastern Cape , Northern Cape , Free State , Northwest and in the northern provinces, as well as in Zimbabwe , Botswana and Namibia .
Systematics
Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium afrum , Lycium arenicola , Lycium cinereum , Lycium horridum and Lycium ferocissimum .
