Lycium arenicola is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium arenicola is a 3 to 4 m high, heavily branched, diocesan shrub . The leaves are frosted, slightly succulent and hairless. They become 14 to 25 mm long and 1 to 2 mm wide.

The flowers are four or five-fold. The calyx is bell-shaped to almost tubular. The calyx tube becomes 2.5 to 3 mm long and is covered with 0.5 to 0.8 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is trumpet-shaped and half-egg-shaped, it is colored white and provided with purple veins. The corolla tube reaches a length of 5 to 6 mm, the corolla lobes are 1.5 to 2 mm long. The base of the stamens is hairy.

The fruit is an egg-shaped, red or occasionally black berry that reaches a length of 4 to 5 mm and a width of 3 to 4 mm.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 72.

Occurrence

The species is widespread on the African continent and occurs there in South Africa in the provinces of Eastern Cape , Free State and Northern Cape , as well as in Lesotho and Botswana .

Systematics

Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium afrum , Lycium schizocalyx , Lycium cinereum , Lycium horridum and Lycium ferocissimum .
