Minami-ku ( Japanese 南 区 , dt. 'Southern District') is a district ( ku ) of the Japanese city of Saitama . Minami is located on the Arakawa River near Tokyo .
history
As an independent city with over 500,000 inhabitants, Urawa was the administrative seat of Saitama Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan, until 2001 . On May 1, 2001, Urawa was dissolved as a city (Shi) and merged with Ōmiya , Yono and Iwatsuki to form the new prefecture capital Saitama, in which the former city of Urawa comprises the southern districts of Sakura ('cherry'), Urawa, Minami and Midori ('green ') forms.
