Ministry of Happiness and Wellbeing

The Ministry for Happiness and Wellbeing (MfG) was founded as a student project at the Mannheim Faculty of Design , which was supposed to “bring the topics of happiness and joie de vivre into conversation in a playful and humorous way” and “motivate people to rethink and participate”. Gina Schöler, one of the students involved in the founding, continued the project and is now the self-appointed Minister of Happiness in charge of her small "ministry". According to her own statements, she has set herself the task of generating ideas and stimulating cultural change , following the example of the country of Bhutan , where happiness was declared a national goal .

The Ministry of Happiness and Wellbeing under Gina Schöler's leadership has set itself the goal of making Germany happier. Personally, at eye level, authentically and with fun, Gina, as a trainer and speaker, conveys “little luck” at various events. Today she finances the happiness project through lectures and seminars both in companies and for private individuals. As an author, she has also given many impulses on the subject of happiness.

Ministry background

In the years 2011 to 2013, the Enquete Commission deliberated “Prosperity, Growth and Quality of Life” of the German Bundestag . This commission dealt with alternatives to the gross domestic product . The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for a new economic paradigm that, in addition to economic targets, should also include social and environmental issues. At the same time, however, according to taz author Leonie Sontheimer, the “growth paradigm” remained unchanged in the German business press. The " excessive economic growth " encountered there was one of the impetus for Axel Kolaschnik, professor at the Mannheim Faculty of Design , to give his students the task of developing a campaign " that was supposed to initiate a change in values in society." the message should be conveyed that "the way things are going cannot go on forever".

The two students, Gina Schöler and Daniel Clarens, then came up with the "Ministry of Happiness and Wellbeing" project as part of this campaign.

aims

Happiness has to be worked out individually. According to the project, it has set itself the task of actively accompanying and helping to shape this process. It is not about "a forced happiness or a dictatorship of happiness", but about "little nudges", that is, impulses ( nudges ) that should motivate you to answer the question of happiness yourself. The Minister of Happiness sees it as her task to initiate a nationwide discussion, to “make people curious” and to support the processes on the way to personal happiness.

The Germans, who, according to some studies, are more of an unhappy people, would “work too much, look too much at money and status and too often forget what really counts”. In general, the project wants to initiate a discussion about values and focus on the social well-being of people. The central question is: “How do we live in a world of tomorrow?” Because Generation Y of the under 30-year-olds no longer want to live to work and want to consume less and enjoy more. According to Gina Schöler, it is “the little things in life that matter and that you have to be more careful about”.

The idea of anchoring happiness as a political goal, so that politicians care more about people's happiness and set framework conditions that should enable fair cooperation, also plays a central role here
