Deutschlandfunk Nova (abbreviation: Dlf Nova , until April 30, 2017: DRadio Wissen ) is the third station of Deutschlandradio and went on air for the first time on January 18, 2010 at 6 a.m. under the name DRadio Wissen . His studio is located in the Cologne broadcasting center of Deutschlandradio. Unlike Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandfunk Kultur , Deutschlandfunk Nova does not broadcast via VHF , but primarily via DAB + digital radio and the Internet .

Since the middle of 2015 the motto of the program has been: It's complicated. Plus good pop (previously: the brain wants work ). The directors of Deutschlandfunk Nova have been Christian Schütte and Lena strenght since June 2020, after the previous program director Ralf Müller-Schmid switched to Deutschlandfunk Kultur. Since February 19, 2014, the station has positioned itself as a sophisticated youth radio with an above-average proportion of words and a heterogeneous selection of music.

program

Until February 2014

During the day, DRadio Wissen broadcasted short breaks with preferably calm, electronic music every quarter of an hour, alternating between current events and science - a concept that program director Günter Müchler calls news cross . Half-hourly broadcasts were planned for the evening. The contributions were delivered by the other two full programs of Deutschlandradios and the ARD broadcasters. 28 posts were created for the program. The budget was set at 6.9 million euros.

During the day, the program was structured every 15 minutes according to the following scheme:

  • Agenda (news)
  • Nature (environment, technology and nature)
  • Media (communication and web)
  • Globus (foreign reports)
  • Culture
  • My future (education)
  • Scope ("gymnastics for the brain and ears")

Between the blocks, there were two world news and two knowledge news every hour . On weekdays after 6 p.m. and on weekends, programs from the sister stations Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur as well as other ARD stations such as Bayern2 or hr2 were taken over. International cooperation was carried out with Radio France , the BBC and DRS 2 . News from Northwest Radio was delivered in Latin. In the lecture hall series , historical and current scientific lectures were given, usually several successive episodes on one topic. Music shows were on offer on Saturday and Sunday evenings. The program's partners included Zeit Online and c't .

Program reform

Plans to reform DRadio Wissen's program had been under discussion since the beginning of 2013, but dragged on. After it was announced in January 2013 that DRadio Wissen would undergo a massive overhaul in the course of the year, that the program should become significantly more music-heavy and appeal to a younger target group, it was officially announced on June 20, 2013 that the program would be in its The previous form was discontinued and replaced by a youth-oriented format at the end of the year. The change applies above all to the music, which should be aimed at a much younger audience. Therefore, the collaboration with the moderator Alan Bangs , who had previously designed the music programs in the evening program on the weekend, will not be extended. January 2014 was given as the time for “refreshing the program” and for a “new website” in mid-February 2014. The official start date for the new program was February 19, 2014.

Since February 2014

A new program format has been broadcast since February 19, 2014 following a comprehensive program reform. Since then, there are no longer any quarter-hourly sections in the daily program. During the day, the green strip is broadcast continuously for eight hours . The knowledge news section every hour around 45 minutes and the editorial conference were taken over from the old program scheme. The lecture hall was also part of the previous program, but this program is now only broadcast on weekends.

In addition, music now occupies a more prominent position. The aim of the relaunch was to create a program that combines sophisticated content with sophisticated music. According to program director Dr. Ralf Müller-Schmid "to make a challenging, topic-driven youth program with smart pop music". He explicitly distances himself from the term “mainstream sprinkling”.

As part of a brand structure reform, Deutschlandradio introduced new logos for its radio stations on May 1, 2017. Deutschlandradio Kultur and DRadio Wissen were renamed: Deutschlandradio Kultur has appeared as Deutschlandfunk Kultur since May 1, 2017 , DRadio Wissen as Deutschlandfunk Nova. The conversion of the website took place at the end of April 2017.

music

After the relaunch on February 19, 2014, music at DRadio Wissen plays a far greater role than before, despite the still high proportion of words, and is fully integrated into the program. At night, only an unmoderated music rotation is broadcast in the soundtrack . The musical sound image should be significantly more heterogeneous than is usual with other youth radio stations. A completely "alternative" format, as u. a. Wanting to offer ByteFM or FM4 is not the aim.

Station Voices

The Station Voices have been Marco Sven Reinbold since February 2014 and Kristina Kiauka since May 2017, who followed Joyce Ilg as Station Voice.

reception

The program is broadcast exclusively digitally via the DAB + digital radio standard , cable, satellite and on the Internet as a live stream in Opus , MP3 and AAC formats. At most of the locations where Deutschlandfunk was already represented with 128 kbit / s via DAB before January 18, 2010, the bandwidth was divided into two 64 kbit / s program streams in favor of the DLF and the new program. In September 2014, the bit rate was increased to 88 kbit / s, now it is sent at 96 kbit / s. Deutschlandfunk Nova wants to be particularly attractive to the younger generation and to link the linear radio program with the interactive medium of the Internet. All contributions are therefore also available on the Internet on demand and as podcasts. In mid-2010, the program had "around 40,000" listeners online per day. In South Tyrol , the broadcaster Südtirol broadcasts the station in the DAB + standard.

reception

While Deutschlandradio program director Günter Müchler referred to DRadio Wissen as the “third program of Deutschlandradio” at the 2009 press conference, observers denied the status of a fully-fledged broadcaster for the purely digital program: “Deutschlandradio Wissen will therefore be the first radio program that is none at all : a podcast download station. Actually a kind of public iTunes store. ”In contrast, Ullrich Claus praised the station in the world in 2010 as a polite young academic program, which ignored all market rules with considerable success. According to all the rules of today's program design, “very unfashionable” would dispense with a “ format ” in the customary sense, with “ transparency ” and with a streamlined “ musical color ”. "The message is pure content: knowledge in the literal sense."

Awards

In 2011 DRadio Wissen received the Grimme Online Award . The jury justified the award ceremony in particular with the connection between the radio program and the website. The programs are not sorted according to the broadcast schedule and times, but are structured thematically. The surface of the website can be configured by the users according to their own preferences. The radio reports are qualitatively convincing, and every report is also available online on demand, as a podcast and in text form. “This is how radio should be on the Internet.” In 2016, DRadio-Wissen author Dominik Schottner received the German Radio Prize in the Reportage category for the contribution “Alcohol addiction - Thank you. Ciao! ”, Which was broadcast on June 19, 2015 on One Hundred . In 2019, the news program Update was also awarded the German Radio Prize as the best news and information format . The jury's justification praised the careful research and the timely classification of the topics of the day. The show's team combines “sound information with sophisticated entertainment”.
