history
Minocqua was officially founded in 1889. Although there are various explanations regarding the meaning of the word "Minocqua", the origin lies with the first inhabitants of the island, the Ojibwe Indians. The city of Minocqua is named after "Ninocqua", the Ojibwe Indian term for "afternoon rest".
In the late 1800s, Minocqua was a logging town. Access to wood was made possible via Milwaukee Road. The construction of railroad lines was important to the growth of Minocqua at the time. Later, the railroad took care of tourism and turned Minocqua into the vacation spot that it is to this day. The two original railroad tracks are still intact and serve as the starting point for the Bearskin State Trail , which is ideal for hiking and biking in summer and snowmobiling in winter.
Much of the city's business district was destroyed by a major fire in 1912. Many of the buildings on Hauptstrasse were redesigned and rebuilt after the fire. Downtown has a US post office, banks, and restaurants.
The peninsula, the city center of Minocqua, includes the Campanile Center for the Arts, the Minocqua Police Department, the Minocqua Fire Department, and the Minocqua Community Center, which is home to the city offices and public library.
