Juha Hurme (born June 29, 1959 in Paimio ) is a Finnish theater director and writer.

Life

Juha Hurme studied biology and worked as a biologist. He has been writing and staging plays since the 1990s. He has directed at the Ylioppilasteatteri in Helsinki, the City Theater in Rauma , the Telakka Theater in Tampere and the National Theater in Helsinki. Since 2007 he has also published novels.

Hurme has received a number of scholarships and literary prizes, including the Eino Leinon palkinto ( Eino Leino Prize) in 2006 and the Finlandia Prize for the novel “Niemi” (German: “The Peninsula”) in 2017 . Also in 2017, Hurme was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal.

Hurme gave half of his speech for the Finlandia Prize 2017 in Swedish to highlight the importance of the Swedish language in Finland. In his award speech he followed the tradition of Finnish-Swedish authors such as Gunnar Björling , Elmer Diktonius , Lars Hulden , Runar Schildt and Edith Södergran .
