history

Singer Asif Illyas and bassist Shehab Illyas are brothers with roots in Sri Lanka and, according to their own statements, have always made music together, "since we were able to eat alone". After graduating, they both decided to turn their passion into a profession. They played in various bands until they founded Mir in 1996 and brought Adam Dowling into the band as drummer and second singer. In 1998 they released their first EP called What's Wrong with Being Sexy? . In 2001 the band signed a contract with Eastwest ( Warner ), recorded the debut album Invisible Science and went on a major tour that took them to Europe, among other places, where they performed at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park . The album was well received by the critics and received mostly positive reviews. During this time, Mir were nominated for the Canadian East Coast Music Award in several categories. In 2003 the album State of Emergency followed , which was recorded especially for Europe. In Canada, the band organizes an annual charity concert called MIR Supershow for people in need. In 2005 , the concert, which was sold out with 8,000 visitors, raised over 100,000 dollars to tsunami victims in Sri Lanka . In 2006 Asif and Shehab Illyas personally flew to Sri Lanka to work as ambassadors for a Canadian TV station to see how these funds were being used. Then they went on a big tour with Mir to promote their second album 7 Directions , released in Europe . The title of the album is inspired by the Indian culture that says there are 7 cardinal points. In addition to north, south, east and west, up, down and here are also part of the cardinal points. The band said, "We keep digging for other directions and more depth in what we do, so we thought 7 Directions would be a good name for the album." That same year, Mir were back for the East Coast Music Award nominated. This time in the categories Rock / Group of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. In 2008 the album OK2GO! published in Canada.
