action

Lee Yong-gu is the retarded father of six-year-old Ye-sung. He works as a simple guard in the parking lot of a supermarket. He wants to buy a Sailor Moon backpack for his daughter that she wants. However, he doesn't have enough money at the time. But before his eyes another family buys the backpack, whereupon he wants the backpack from the other child. The family does not allow this.

When Yong-gu is working, the child comes to him with the Sailor Moon rucksack and says that she knows another shop that still has the rucksack and wants to take it there. In the next scene the girl is dead and Yong-gu tries to give first aid. However, he is charged with abuse and murder. The girl's father is the police chief. The case will be closed within a week and Yong-gu will be sentenced to death. He is taken to cell number 7 in a maximum security prison.

The other inmates initially keep their distance from Yong-gu. However, when Yong-gu realizes that other inmates are trying to injure one of his inmates in Cell No. 7, he rescues him. From then on they help him and hide his daughter in cardboard boxes when she performs with the church choir in the prison. The inmates and the girl have a lot of fun together. After a while, however, the guards notice and Yong-gu is locked in a small cell by himself. When another inmate sets a fire and the prison is evacuated, the prison chief wants to intervene, but is in danger. Yong-gu rushes into the room full of fire and saves his life. Also because of Yong-gu's behavior, who is never aware of his situation, he does not believe that he can be a murderer. He obtains the documents of the case and opens the case again. He also finds out that some things like cause of death were left out of consideration in the verdict.

Meanwhile, Ye-sung is allowed to come into the cell at will. Among other things, she brings a cell phone with her so that an inmate can call his wife and teaches the leader of the group to read. Together they prepare Yong-gu for the retrial. Shortly before the new trial, however, the police chief threatened to admit the guilt, otherwise he would do something to his daughter. The lawyer doesn't help either. Yong-gu pleads guilty to everyone's horror. He is sentenced to death again.

However, his fellow inmates and friends refuse to allow an execution. They build a balloon and at another church event they put him and his daughter in the balloon. The guards assume that the balloon will remain within the prison grounds. When the balloon rises higher and higher, they try to stop the balloon, but are hindered by the inmates. However, the balloon rope sticks to the barbed wire on the prison wall and Yong-gu is unable to escape. Yong-gu is executed just before Christmas.

His daughter, who has since become a lawyer, opens the case again to clear her father's name and calls the inmates and the prison chief to the stand. The court decides innocent and describes the death penalty as inappropriate based on the facts at the time.
