Origin of name
The merchant Langhans, who came from Hamburg , was one of the main founders of the urban Weißensee and campaigned for the rapid development of the Weißensee area, named this place in honor of the future seaport of Cuxhaven .
The Protestant community in Neu-Weißensee wanted to build a new church, the Bethanienkirche , at the turn of the century because of the sharp increase in the number of residents .
At that time, Ernst Freiherr von Mirbach (1844–1925) was a member of the General Synodal Council of the Protestant Church. He was a great supporter of the church and had more than 300 churches built with the moral and material support of Empress Auguste Victoria . In 1890, the mayor Feldtmann turned to him to get financial support for the building of the church, which was to be built on Cuxhavener Platz.
When the topping-out ceremony of the Bethanienkirche was celebrated in 1902, the square was also renamed “Mirbachplatz”.
