Miro Rys (born July 18, 1957 in Kladno , Czechoslovakia , † 1977 in West Berlin ) was an American football player of Czechoslovak descent.
Career
Rys, whose father Miroslav had emigrated to the United States via Yugoslavia and Austria after the events of the Prague Spring in 1968 , began playing football at Morton East High School in Cicero, Illinois . After graduating in 1975, at the age of 18, the striker signed a professional contract with NASL club Chicago Sting , for whom he scored four goals in 17 games in his first season.
These services earned him a call-up to the US national team in 1976 . Rys made his debut on October 20, 1976 at the age of 19 years, three months and two days in a World Cup qualifier against Canada and scored the opening goal in his team's 2-0 success. He then played in two goalless draws against Haiti.
For the 1977 season, the attacker moved to the Los Angeles Aztecs , where he played together with George Best in the storm. After two games and two goals for the Aztecs, Borussia Dortmund initially showed interest in the young national player, who eventually moved to Hertha BSC . However, Rys never played a game for Hertha.
death
Only a few days in Berlin, Rys had an accident on the way back from team training in a serious car accident .
The Illinois High School Soccer Association (IHSSCA) presents the Miro Rys Sportsmanship Award annually in memory of Miro Rys .
