Misha Bakaleinikoff ( Russian Михаил Романович Бакалейников Mikhail Romanowitsch Bakaleinikow ; born November 10, 1890 in Moscow , †  August 10, 1960 in Los Angeles ) was a Russian film composer who worked in Hollywood .

Life

Bakaleinikoff was studying music when the Russian Revolution broke out, the consequences of which he fled to the USA in 1926 . In 1931 he came to Hollywood and became a violinist in the Columbia Pictures studio orchestra . In his early years he was already responsible for compiling film music from the company's archives and often composed the transitions from one piece to another. He later switched to his actual instrument, the double bass , with which he recorded numerous film scores . In the early 1940s, Bakaleinikoff was the musical director responsible for numerous films, mainly B-films and serialsand short films. Due to his position, he also composed film music, but was mainly responsible for the entire musical department, so that he appeared more frequently as a conductor and arranger.

The Freemason became known for his compositions for several science fiction films of the time, in which he used disharmonies and placed the brass section in the foreground.

His brother Constantin (1898–1966) worked in a similar position at RKO Pictures .
