Constantin Bakaleinikoff

Constantin Romanovich Bakaleinikoff ( Russian Константин Романович Бакалейников , Konstantin Romanovich Bakaleinikow ; born April 26, 1898 in Moscow ; †  September 3, 1966 in Los Angeles ) was a Russian film composer . Bakaleinikoff was nominated several times for the Academy Award for his film music , but was never able to win it.

Life

Bakaleinikoff studied at the Moscow Conservatory and left Russia after the revolution . In the United States, he first worked as a conductor for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra before turning to film music in the late 1920s. Bakaleinikoff composed for Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , before moving to Columbia Pictures for a short time in 1940 . He then went to RKO Pictures and worked there until the studio closed in 1955. In 1938 Bakaleinikoff was nominated for the Academy Award for the first time for his music to Something to sing about . He was mostly active as the musical director of a film production or conducted the recordings of the film music. Bakaleinikoff was married to the silent film actress Fritzi Ridgeway . His brother Mischa was also a film composer.
