The United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala ( Spanish Misión de Verificación de las Nacionas Unidas en Guatemala , MINUGUA ) was based on UN Resolution 1094 of January 20, 1997 and was a peacekeeping mission that took place in Guatemala from January to September 1997 .

The aim of the mandate was to review the ceasefire agreement signed in Oslo on December 4, 1996 between the government of Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG). The Oslo Agreement ( Oslo Agreement , S / 1996/1045) included official control over the cessation of fighting, the cleaning up of the armed forces and the disarmament and demobilization of the URNG guerrilla fighters in the designated disarmament points.

The headquarters were in Guatemala City . The UN Secretary General's special envoy and head of the mission was Jean Arnault from France . He was supported by the Spanish Brigadier General Jose B. Rodriguez Rodriguez as head of the approximately 150-strong troop of military observers, accompanied by medical personnel.

MINUGUA was supported by Argentina , Australia , Brazil , Germany , Ecuador , Canada , Norway , Austria , Russia , Sweden , Singapore , Spain , Ukraine , Uruguay , USA and Venezuela .
