Missing man formation was an American rock band , led by former Grateful Dead - keyboardist Vince Welnick was founded.

history

After the Grateful Dead broke up and his old band The Tubes re-formed with another keyboardist, Welnick stayed loyal to the Dead family by first playing in Bob Weir's band Ratdog before forming his own band Missing Man Formation in the spring of 1996 .

Founding members included guitarist Steve Kimock, who previously played with Kingfish , and Prairie Prince of The Tubes and founding member of Journey . Then there was bassist Bobby Vega from Jefferson Starship .

The name Missing Man Formation comes from Welnick's sister. She listened to fans talking about the future of the Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia , compared to a Missing Man formation .

Missing Man Formation was primarily a live band that performed with other guest musicians to increase the variety of instruments. However, the band also played with younger bands such as String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon .

The band only released one album of the same name in 1998. After that, Welnick broke up the band, as he did not achieve the success he had hoped for. Of the Grateful Dead follow-up projects, Missing Man Formation is considered the most unpopular.

In 2005 they got together for another show on May 5th at the Palace Theater in Hamilton, New York.
