Mission East Germany eV (MED) is a Christian-oriented emergency aid and development organization. It is based in Kiel and the office is in Berlin . Mission East states that the purpose of the association is to support people and communities in crisis areas. The organization is active with projects in Afghanistan , Armenia , Bangladesh , Iraq , Myanmar , North Korea , Nepal and Tajikistan . The independent association is connected to the Danish organization Mission Øst, the joint program office is in Brussels . Mission East is certified by the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS) and bears the donation seal of the German Central Institute for Social Issues (DZI) . The organization is also a signatory to the Transparent Civil Society Initiative and the Red Cross Code of Conduct .

history

The association was founded in 2013 by Kim Hartzner with Otto Bernhardt as chairman. The association's statutes were signed on December 3rd, 2013 in Berlin, 22 years after the founding of the Danish sister organization Mission Øst. At the time of the Soviet Union, René Hartzner and his son Kim Hartzner traveled frequently through Eastern Europe and founded Mission Øst in 1991 in view of the situation of many people who were threatened by civil wars from the collapse of the Soviet Union . Since then the association has carried out projects in Afghanistan , Albania , Armenia , Myanmar , Iraq , Mongolia , Nepal , North Korea , the Philippines , Romania , Russia , Syria , Tajikistan and the Ukraine . According to the company, around 12 million euros are generated annually for emergency aid and development projects.

According to the company, the work is based on Christian values and the aim is to support vulnerable population groups and communities through humanitarian aid and development cooperation. The focus is on humanitarian aid , rural development and inclusion .

financing

For the year 2017, the association reports total income of 2,406,132 euros. Of this, 78,496 euros were booked for staff and 145,888 euros for other operating expenses. A large part of the money raised came from the public purse. In 2017, for example, the public sector financed B. the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development several projects of Mission East in Afghanistan and emergency aid projects in Iraq with 2,181,197 euros. A smaller part of 162,000 euros came from private donations.
