Mission Museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A mission museum deals with the history of Christian missions . Mission museums in the true sense of the word have been in existence since the early 20th century. But their roots go back to the chambers of curiosities of the Baroque era. In this respect, the Art and Natural History Chamber of the Francke Foundations (around 1700) can in some respects be regarded as the oldest mission museum in the world, as it collected and presented rarities from all over the world, which were largely compiled by the missionaries of the Danish-Halle Mission and gave an eloquent testimony to the diversity of foreign cultures. The collections left by missionaries often formed the basis of later ethnological exhibitions. Much later, the understanding changed and made the history of the mission itself the object of reflected socio-historical presentation.
