The Mittelaletsch Glacier is a valley glacier in the southern part of the Bernese Alps . It is entirely located in the Swiss canton of Valais . It belongs to the Aletsch Glacier system and was connected to the Great Aletsch Glacier as a side glacier until 1970. The total area of the Mittelaletsch Glacier was determined in 2009 to be 8.42 km². In 1997 the length of the glacier was 5.1 kilometers, in the following years the change in length could not be reliably determined because the lower area of the glacier is heavily covered with rubble. The exposure of the glacier is southeast.

location

The Mittelaletsch Glacier starts on the eastern slope of the Aletschhorn ( 4193  m above sea level ) and on the southern slope of the Dreieckhorn ( 3811  m above sea level ). In places the glacier is quite steep in the upper area, the gradient is sometimes over 40%. The Mittelaletsch glacier gathers in the south-east running valley between Geisshorn ( 3740  m above sea level ) in the west and from Olmenhorn ( 3314  m above sea level ) in the east. Another field of firn joins from the Geisshorn. In 1992 the glacier tongue ended at an altitude of 2292  m . The meltwater flows from there to the Great Aletsch Glacier, about a kilometer away, and is absorbed by it, with a small meltwater lake sometimes damming up at the edge during the summer.

The area of the Mittelaletsch Glacier was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list together with the Great Aletsch Glacier in December 2001 as the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site.
