The Bacillus Rossius , partly Mediterranean Stabschrecke written ( Bacillus rossius ) is a kind of the order of Gespenstschrecken (phasmatodea). It occurs in the north-western Mediterranean region , especially in Spain , southern France , Italy and the Balkan Peninsula .

Appearance

The color varies from green to brown, nymphs are light green. Except for their size, they resemble the adults (adults). With up to 10.5 cm, the females are significantly larger than the approx. 6 cm long males. The feelers are short.

Way of life and reproduction

The Mediterranean stick insects prefer to live in bushland, on dry meadows or on the edges of forests. Here it lives in bushes and trees, where it is camouflaged as plant stems or twigs due to its rod-shaped appearance. During the day the animals hardly move. At night they feed on the food plants.

Two generations develop per year, the first hatching in spring and the second in summer. The eggs of the second generation overwinter, while the animals do not survive the colder season. The female simply drops up to 16 eggs on the floor each night. In total, a female can lay over 1000 eggs. These are oval, 4 mm long, 2 mm wide and of a maroon color. Depending on the temperature, the nymphs can hatch after a month or well over a year. Males are rare. The species is capable of parthenogenesis .

attitude

A 30 × 30 × 30 cm terrarium is sufficient for two breeding pairs . The temperature should be 20-25 ° C. The humidity should be between 60 and 70%, which can be achieved by spraying in the evening and also enables the animals to drink. An earth-sand mixture can be used as the substrate. The leaves of hazelnuts , blackberries , raspberries , apples or beeches are eaten .

The species is listed by the Phasmid Study Group under both PSG number 3 and number 56.
