The middle slit nose ( Nycteris intermedia ) is a species of bat of the genus slit nose found in West and Central Africa .

description

The middle slit nose is about 7 g and an average forearm length of 3.6 cm a very small bat species. Outwardly, it resembles the dwarf and Bate slit nose , whose forearm length is usually slightly shorter or larger. The fur is dark brown above and below. The wings are also dark brown and hairless. The ears are wide and rounded, and the outer edge of the tragus is concave halfway along its length. As with other slit noses, the face above the muzzle appears to be divided into two by a longitudinal furrow.

distribution

The middle slit nose is common in West and Central Africa. It occurs from Guinea and Liberia on the west coast, through Ghana and Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Tanzania and Angola .

Way of life

The evidence of the middle slit nose almost all comes from the lowland rainforest and adjacent savannah landscapes as well as from gallery forests and forest savannas such as the miombo . Arthropods, which are collected from the vegetation surface or the soil, are thought to serve as food. Little is known about the quarters, one specimen was found in an abandoned house, another in a cave.

Etymology & Research History

The type specimen was collected by Villy Aellen in 1953 in the Ivory Coast . First, the type was assigned to the Bate slotted nose . The specific epithon refers to the mean size of the species compared to the closely related and very similar looking dwarf and Bate slit nose.

Danger

On the part of the IUCN , the species is classified as not endangered (“least concern”) due to its large distribution area.
