The Miyin Temple ( Chinese  密 印 寺 , Pinyin Mìyìn Sì , German about: "Temple of the Clear Seal") is a Buddhist temple in Weishan (溈 山鄉), Hunan , People's Republic of China . It was founded in the 8th century and is still an important temple of Chan Buddhism today.

The temple has, among other things, an entrance hall (山门), "Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas" (万佛殿,), "Hall of the great heroes" ( 大雄宝殿 ) Assisted dnyana ( 禅房 ), dining hall ( 斋堂 ). The buildings extend over approx. 9,000 m².

Tang Dynasty

813, in the eighth year of the Yuanhe Tang Xianzong , a traveler named Liu Qian (came 刘潜 ) to Ningxiang in the province of Hunan . He visited Mount Wei (溈 山) and admired the beautiful nature. The mountain has seven peaks that are reminiscent of the Great Bear . After the trip, Liu Qian went to Baizhang Mountain ( 百丈 山 ) in Jiangxi and told his friend Baizhang Huaihai about the place. He suggested building temples there. Huaihai sent his disciple Lingyou ( 灵 佑 ) to go there, build temples and spread Buddhism. On August 15, according to the Chinese calendar , Lingyou reached Mount Wei and built a hut. Together with Da'an ( 大安 禅师 dt. "Great Peace) he built the Yingchan Temple ( 应 禅寺 dt." Meeting of the Monks "). Later he named it San'ta Temple ( 三 塔寺 dt." Temple of the three towers ") around.

845 after the great persecution of Buddhists ( 唐武宗 灭佛 ) under Tang Wuzong , Lingyou had withdrawn from the monastery and lived as a hermit. Chancellor Pei Xiu had also retired and was working for the governor of Jingzhou in Hunan. He sent a copy of the Buddhist Canon to his friend Lingyou . In 849, Emperor Xuanzong named the temple Miyin Si ( 密 印 禅寺 ) and the Chancellor Pei Xiu promoted the expansion. His second son Pei Wende ( 裴文德 ) went to the monastery on behalf of the Crown Prince. Lingyou gave him the monk name Fahai ( 法 海 , English sea of ​​Buddhist teachings). He appears as a character in the famous Buddhist fairy tale the legend of the white snake (白蛇傳).

Lingyou got to know a new sect of Buddhism on a pilgrimage to Mount Yang in Yichun , Jiangxi : the Guiyang School .

In 1104, the fourth year of Chongning des Song Huizong , the temple was destroyed by fire. The monk Kongyin ( 空 印 禅师 ) rebuilt it.

Ming Dynasty

In 1370, the third year of Hongwu of Hongwu , the temple burned down again. The monk Chedang ( 彻 当 禅师 ) rebuilt the Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas . There was also a fire in 1619, the 47th year of Wanli des Wanli .

Qing Dynasty

In 1655, in the twelfth year of Shunzhi of Shunzhi , Huishan ( 慧 山 禅师 ) renewed the temple and introduced the teachings of the Rinzai-shū .

In 1918 the temple burned down due to arson. The culprit was Zhang Sanyuan ( 张 三元 ). In 1922, the monk Yongguang ( 永光 禅师 ) reintroduced the Guiyang School and invited famous monks to teach Buddhism. In 1933 the monk Bao ( 僧宝 ) solicited donations and renovated the temple.

People's Republic of China

In 1966, during the Cultural Revolution , the temple was closed and devastated by the Red Guards . In 1972 the temple was declared a cultural asset at the provincial level. In September 2005, the Hunan Buddhist Association , the Ningxiang Government, and the Miyin Temple Corporation held the first "The International Buddhist Culture Festival".

meaning

The Miyin Si became known in Europe because the Norwegian missionary and religious scholar Karl Ludvig Reichelt had groundbreaking experiences with Buddhism there. He later wrote about his experience there that he had for the first time gained a glimpse into a unique and exclusive world of deep religiosity, of mysticism and heartbreaking tragedy and of great wealth.
