description

Mizzi Langer Wall (2015)

The Mizzi-Langer-Wand is located in the 23rd district of Vienna , Liesing , in the Rodaun district, in a former quarry , in the middle of the black pine forest that is common there . It is located on the southern slope of the Zugberg above Kaltenleutgebner Straße and is accessible via a sidewalk from the parking lot in Willergasse, opposite the Sta. Christiana available. The Mizzi-Langer-Wand is an approx. 40 m high rock face, which in some places has a level of difficulty 6+ and is therefore also interesting for advanced mountaineers for climbing and bouldering . Worth mentioning here are, for example, the large and small triangles , the Fredkante , the rhinoceros skin and the digestive walk . The Mizzi-Langer-Wand is the only natural climbing park in Vienna.

history

The Mizzi-Langer-Wand was named after the mountaineer Maria "Mizzi" Langer-Kauba . Mizzi Langer and her husband, Franz Johann Kauba, took over the oldest sporting goods store in Vienna, founded in 1896. At the end of the 19th century, the so-called Langer-Platte , a group of enthusiastic mountaineers who held climbing exercises and competitions in the former quarry, formed around them . As a result, the name Mizzi-Langer-Wand established itself relatively soon in the population.

The Mizzi-Langer-Wall is protected as a natural monument ( list entry ).

At the foot of the Mizzi-Langer-Wand is the entrance to an air raid shelter that was built during the Second World War . The facility is 138.5 meters long and served the people of Rodaun to protect them from air raids, especially towards the end of the war. Originally, there was also seating in the tunnel, which is still evident today from iron bars driven 50 cm into the wall and on which wooden panels were placed. The system was provided with electric light and a ventilation system and originally had a second entrance or exit at the eastern end, which has now been buried.

controversy

In June 2002 a climber fell from a height of 10 meters on the Mizzi-Langer wall because one of the hooks had come loose from the wall. The climber was seriously injured and sued the landowner for damages . The legal dispute went as far as the Supreme Court, with all instances dismissing the claim for compensation for the injured climber. The justification for the judgment was that the landowner neither operates nor advertises the climbing park and does not derive any economic benefit from it, but rather is forced to tolerate climbers by the Forest Act, according to which everyone is allowed to use the forest for recreational purposes.
