Cellular network code

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mobile network code (probably translated from the English Mobile Network Code , also called MNC for short ) is used to identify a GSM , UMTS or TETRA radio network provider and is assigned independently by each country. In Germany this is the Federal Network Agency and Austria, Broadcasting and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority for jurisdiction in Switzerland which takes OFCOM this function.

The MNC is part of the IMSI , the PLMN identifier and the LAI . The MNC is referred to as T-MNC ( TETRA-MNC ) in TETRA networks .

Together with the Mobile Country Code (MCC), this results in a unique identification of the provider (MCCMNC). Germany has the code 262 and this results in the number 26202 for Germany / Vodafone.

A distinction must be made between the MNC, which a cellular network uses together with the MCC for identification, i.e. to form the PLMN identifier (in the table in the column "for PLMN" and [ in the following ] highlighted in bold), and another, one MNCs assigned to the network operator, which are only used to generate IMSIs.

The gaps in the MNC list are occupied by non-public identifiers (e.g. Bundeswehr). There are also local test networks, but they use MNCs that were not assigned by the Federal Network Agency.

Only 2-digit MNCs are used in the GSM and UMTS networks in Germany.
