Moctezuma is a small town in the Mexican state of Sonora .
Moctezuma is located about 175 km northeast of Hermosillo and is the capital of the 1763.39 km² Municipio Moctezuma . The city has 4,326 inhabitants (as of 2010) and is located on the Río Moctezuma at an altitude of 677 m above sea level . It was founded in 1644 under the name Fundación de San Miguel de Arcángel de Oposura by the Jesuit missionary Marcos del Río , later just called Oposura . On September 9, 1828, the city was given its current name Moctezuma .
In the area around Moctezuma there are a total of seven mines or prospections (as of 2014), of which the following three are known type localities for a large number of minerals:
- The former gold mine "Mina la Bambolla" ( Moctezuma Mine ) is one of the best-known sites of tellurium and tellurium-containing minerals with currently 14 type minerals. In addition to the named after Moctezuma mineral Moctezumit , named after the mine Bambollait and named after the state Sonorait these are still Burckhardtit , Cuzticit , Denningit , Eztlit , Mroseit , paratellurite , Poughit , Schmitterit , Spiroffit , xocolatlite and zemannite .
- The "Mina la Bambollita" ( Oriental Mine ) is considered the type locality for the nine minerals Benleonardit , Carlfriesit , Cervelleit , Cesbronit , Choloalit , Quetzalcoatlit , Tlalocit , Tlapallit and Xocomecatlit .
- The "San Miguel Mine" is known so far only for the cliffordite as a type locality.
