Modest Jonathan Mero (born September 28, 1959 ) is a diplomat from Tanzania who has been Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York City since 2017 .

Life

After attending school, Mero began studying at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), which he completed with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). A postgraduate studies of Public Finance at the University of Strathclyde closed it with a Master of Science (MSc Finance) from. He then began his professional activity in 1987 as a senior economist in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, where he worked until 2004. He was then trade policy advisor to the Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) between 2004 and 2005 and head of the political department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 2005 to 2006, before becoming envoy, economic advisor and chancellor of the Tanzania's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City.

In May 2013 Mero took over the post of Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva . In this role, he was also as Permanent Representative of Tanzania with all other in Geneva and in Vienna -based international organization accredited as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Organization of the Treaty on the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban (CTBTO).

In 2017 Mero was appointed Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York City and presented his letter of accreditation to UN Secretary General António Guterres on March 21, 2017 .
