Military diploma of Mogetissa

Mogetissa ( bl. 1st / 2nd century ) was a rider of Celtic origin who served as a soldier in the Roman army and is known for having received a military diploma . He belonged to the Boier tribe and probably came from the area around Gorgobina in Gaul , where Gaius Iulius Caesar Boier settled. He was the son of a Comatullus and, with his wife Verecunda, a Sequan woman , and their daughter Matrulla, is the first resident of the Roman vicus Biriciana , today's Weißenburg in Bavaria in Middle Franconia . Mogetissa will probably have settled in the region with his family after his army service.

During construction work on the Treuchtlingen – Pleinfeld railway line in the winter of 1867, construction workers discovered Mogetissa's military diploma, which is one of the most important of its kind. It is a 16 by 13 centimeter double bronze plaque dated June 30, 107 AD, which announces the honorable discharge of the soldier from the Ala I Hispanorum Auriana stationed in Biriciana . This gave Mogetissa Roman citizenship and the right to marry , which legalized his relationship and his illegitimate child . The military diploma has been in the Römermuseum Weißenburg since 2017 .

The indoor swimming pool Mogetissa-Therme in Weißenburg is named after him.
