exhibition
The thematic focus is on Roman history, the Romans on the Raetian Limes in Bavaria, the Romans in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district and the Weißenburg treasure trove .
In 1931 the museum was opened as a local museum . At that time, the excavations found by the route commissioner of the Reichslimeskommission , Wilhelm Kohl , and his successors Julius Tröltsch and Max Raab formed the core of the exhibition. In 1964 the exhibition was completely redesigned and adapted to the times. The exhibition followed a chronological scheme and dealt with prehistory and early history as well as the early Middle Ages - however, the focus was on the Roman era. The history of the region over the centuries should be supported by finds for the visitors.
When the Weißenburg treasure trove was discovered in 1979 and bought by the Free State of Bavaria (1980), the former local history museum became today's Roman museum. It was opened in 1983 as a branch museum of the Munich State Archaeological Collection . Since then, the museum has housed the Weissenburg Roman Treasure , consisting of 114 top-quality products from ancient handicrafts . These include 17 figures of gods, unique in terms of quality and state of preservation, as well as votive tablets, vessels from the sacred area, everyday objects and pieces of parade equipment.
After renovations and a redesign of the exhibition, the Roman Museum was reopened on March 15, 2017. The exhibition shows archaeological finds from the entire Limes area in Bavaria on the first floor . The Roman treasure of Weißenburg takes up the entire second floor. The old chronological representation from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages was abandoned in favor of focusing on the Roman period. At the beginning of the tour, information on the provincial administration , the role of the emperor and the military leads to the core period of the exhibition: the Roman settlement north of the Danube . The reference to the entire Reich runs like a red thread through the entire exhibition.
The Bavarian Limes Information Center , which is accessible free of charge, and the city's tourist information center are also located on the ground floor of the Roman Museum .
