Zsolt Visy

Zsolt Visy (born May 23, 1944 in Szeged , Csongrád County , Hungary ) is a Hungarian provincial Roman archaeologist . From 1998 to 2000 he was Deputy State Secretary in the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage, Budapest .

Life

Visy attended the Radnóti-Miklós-Gymnasium in his hometown Szeged and began his studies in 1962 at the Philosophical Faculty of the Loránd Eötvös University (ELTE) in Budapest. In 1967 Visy completed his diploma in archeology-Latin there and received his doctorate in 1977 with a thesis on the Danube provinces during the Domitian era ( university doctorate ). In 1995 he became a candidate for historical studies (történelemtudomány kandidátusa) after his dissertation on typological and historical studies of the Roman carriage industry . With his subsequent work on the Pannonian Limes in Hungary, he received his habilitation in 1998 at the ELTE and in 2002 his doctorate as a historian of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA).

Visy worked from 1967 to 1983 as a senior museum scientist at the Intercisa Museum in Dunaújváros and has been employed at the University of Pécs since 1984 , initially as a university lecturer (assistant professor) and from 1995 to 1998 as an associate professor, and from 1996 to 1998 he was also the dean of his university . From 1998 to 2000 he held a political office as Deputy State Secretary in the Hungarian Ministry of National Cultural Heritage. During this time he was involved in the complex negotiations on reconciliation and the establishment of the Austrian Reconciliation Fund. Among other things, this fund supports the Hungarian slave laborers who were deported to Austria during the Nazi dictatorship. In 2003 Visy returned to the University of Pécs and has since worked there at the Chair of Ancient History and Archeology as head of the archaeological seminar. In 2008, he set up a postgraduate course in cultural heritage management at the University of Pécs.

Zsolt Visy is one of the most internationally renowned experts in the field of Pannonian Limes exploration . In addition, he focused on the areas of Roman bathing culture, Romanization, the Dacians, aerial archeology and monument protection.

Memberships

Among other things, he has been a member of the Hungarian Society for Archeology and Art History (Magyar Régészeti és Művészettörténeti Társaság) since 1963, member of the Society of Friends of Antiquity in the Rhineland , Chairman of the Hungarian World Heritage Committee (1998-2000), corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (since 2002) , full member of the Society of Antiquaries of London (since 2006), founding member and president of the Hungarian Limes Commission (since 2008), member of the Association for the Promotion of Christian Archeology in Austria, Vice President of the International Council for the Preservation of Monuments (ICOMOS) and President of the Committee of Experts on Culture of the Hungarian UNESCO Commission (since 2012). In 1963 he became a member of the Hungarian Society for Classical Studies (Ókortudományi Társaság), where he was deputy chairman from 1997 to 2003 and general secretary from 2003 to 2006. Visy is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI).
