Hans-Peter Kuhnen
Hans-Peter Kuhnen (born March 23, 1953 in Göppingen ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist . His main focus is on research on Roman Trier ( Augusta Treverorum ) and on the archeology of Israel .
Career
After the civil service , which he with the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace made in Israel, studied Kuhnen Provincial Roman Archeology at the universities of Munich , Heidelberg and Tel-Aviv , with minors in Prehistory and Early History and Ancient History . In 1982 he received his doctorate in Munich under Günter Ulbert with the subject of studies on the settlement archeology of Carmel. Israel between Hellenism and Late Antiquity.
From 1982 to 1987 Kuhnen was a consultant for branch museums and public relations at the Prehistoric State Collection in Munich , then until 1990 acting head of the archaeological department of the Kurpfälzisches Museum in Heidelberg . From 1990 to 1994 he headed the archaeological collections of the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart and was responsible for the Limes Museum Aalen , Roman Museum Arae Flaviae Rottweil and the Roman wine cellar Oberriexingen . From 1994 to 2004 Kuhnen was head of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier . From 2003 to 2005 he worked in the Ministry for Science, Further Education, Research and Culture Mainz on the preparation of a structural reform of the state museums, archives and monument preservation in Rhineland-Palatinate . From November 1, 2005 to August 15, 2011, Kuhnen headed the Institute for Archeology and Natural Sciences Koblenz at the State Office for Monument Preservation in Rhineland-Palatinate (since 2007 General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate ). Since August 15, 2011 he has been the Senior Academic Director at the Institute for Classical Studies, Department of Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Mainz , where he teaches Provincial Roman and Biblical archeology. In 2012 he completed his habilitation at the University of Mainz and received the venia legendi in Provincial Roman Archeology. In 2018 the University of Mainz awarded him the title of adjunct professor .
The focus of his teaching and research activities since 2009 has been the early Islamic caliph's palace Khirbat al Minya on the Sea of Galilee (Israel), for the restoration of which he received funding from the Federal Foreign Office's cultural preservation program in 2015 and 2016.
Kuhnen has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1999 . He is also the honorary secretary of the Association of Museums in the Greater Region SaarLorLuxPalatinatWallonie and has been a member of the German-Israeli Society Trier since 2008. He received teaching positions at the universities of Munich (1986/88), Saarbrücken (1988/9), Heidelberg (1989/1990), Stuttgart (1993/4), Trier (2000/01) and Mainz (since 2006 in Biblical Archeology and Vor - and early history ).
