Bernd Steidl

Bernd Steidl (* 1967 in Bad Nauheim ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist . As chief conservator, he is head of the Roman Age department of the State Archaeological Collection in Munich .

Steidl grew up in Echzell and studied Provincial Roman Archeology and Ancient History at the universities of Passau and Freiburg . In 1991 he completed his studies in Freiburg with Hans Ulrich Nuber with a master's thesis on the late imperial settlements near Echzell in the Wetterau district . In 1994 he published his dissertation Die Wetterau from 3rd to 5th Century AD , published in 2000 , which he also submitted in Freiburg. For this work he received the Eduard Anthes Prize in 1995 .

Steidl then led excavations of Germanic settlements in Main Franconia from 1994 to 1997 . From 1997 he was employed at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , Department of Prehistory and Early History in Würzburg . In 1998 he was appointed curator and head of the Roman Period department at the State Archaeological Collection. He still holds this office today. In 2000, 2002 and 2007 Steidl was responsible for the excavations of the beneficiary station at the Obernburg fort . Between 2010 and 2020 he was also the deputy director of the State Archaeological Collection.

Since September 1, 2017, the archaeologist has also held the honorary position of district home keeper in the soil monuments department for the Landsberg am Lech district , replacing Guntram Schönfeld, who was active until 2016 . He is a founding member of the German Limes Commission .

Bernd Steidl is married and lives in Reisch in Upper Bavaria .
