The Moglenitsas ( Greek Μογλενίτσας or Almopeos Αλμωπαίος, Ano Loudias Άνω Λουδίας, formerly also Moglenitikos Μογλενίτικος, Slav. Meglenica Мегленица is a river in north Macedonia , Turkish Karaca ) . It is formed by the confluence of numerous mountain streams that surround the Aridea plateau from the surrounding mountains Voras , Pinovo, Tzena and Paiko . The largest tributaries are named Xiropotamos, Toplitsas, Koziakas and Golemas. As the only outflow from the Almopia area, it flows south between low hills and forms a small gorge here. In the past it continued to flow into Lake Giannitsa, and through it its waters flowed into the Loudias River . However, with the drainage work carried out in 1930 to drain the lake, its river bed was diverted. It now drains into the Aliakmonas River via an artificial ditch called Tafros 66 (dt. 'Ditch 66') .

The river with its tributaries irrigates the fields of the Almopia landscape . Its gorge in the south is used by tourists for sports such as rafting and kayaking .

Remarks

  1. The name of the canal is derived from the fact that it flows into the Aegean Sea 66 km before the mouth of the Aliakmonas, cf.
