The Mohale Dam (English: Mohale Dam ) is the second largest dam in Lesotho . It lies on the Senqunyane , a tributary of the Oranje called Senqu there . As part of the “ Lesotho Highlands Water Project ” (LHWP), it is the second of five planned dams that are primarily intended to supply water to South Africa .
history
The Mohale Dam was built between 1998 and 2001 by Concor , Hochtief and Impregilo . The dam is named after the place Mohale, which was built during the construction of the dam and is located a few kilometers southwest of the dam. This in turn is named after the earlier morena Mohale.
geography
The dam is located around 80 kilometers east of the capital Maseru in the districts of Maseru and Thaba-Tseka . To the north-east of the Mohale Dam lies the Katse Dam , which is also part of the LHWP. A 32-kilometer-long underground pipeline with a diameter of 4.5 meters leads to it, through which the water is finally directed to the South African province of Gauteng around Johannesburg .
The dam consists of nearby quarried basalt - quarry stone , which has been covered with a layer of concrete (" CFR dam "). On the valley side of the dam, a zigzag road runs to the crown. Up to 2500 m³ of water per second can be drained via an overflow channel. The water level is 2075 meters above sea level.
From Maseru, paved roads lead to the dam. Bridges lead over some bulges of the lake. Excursions with a motor ship take place regularly on the reservoir.
