Mohammad Rahim Khushnawaz

Mohammad Rahim Khushnawaz (* 1943 in Herat ; † 2011 ) was an Afghan rubab player .

Life

Khushnawaz came from a family of musicians. His grandfather was a tabla player , and he was introduced to traditional Afghan music by his father, the singer and harmonium player Amir Jan Kushnawaz , the old master of urban music in Herat from the 1930s to the 1960s . Two of his brothers and his son also became professional musicians. He himself learned to play the rubāb and became one of the most important masters of his time on this Afghan national instrument.

In 1995 he made his European debut at the Paris Theater de la Ville . A short time later, he fled the rule of the Taliban to Mashhad in Iran. In later years he returned to his hometown, where he also worked as a music teacher.
