Mohammed Benzakour

Mohammed Benzakour (born January 10, 1972 in Nador , Morocco ) is a Dutch-Moroccan journalist and writer (essayist, poet).

Life

When he was three years old, he and his mother moved to Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands, where his father worked. After school he studied sociology and public administration at the University of Leiden and later went to Rotterdam to do his Masters. During this time he joined the Partij van de Arbeid . He started his journalistic career at De Volkskrant and also published articles in the newspapers NRC Handelsblad , De Groene Amsterdammer and Vrij Nederland .

In 1995 he received the El Hizjra Literature Prize, in 1999 the Amsterdam Media Prize, and in 2001 the Silver Zebra. He published numerous essays and collections of essays in the 2000s.

Benzakour comes from the Berber people and has often dealt with his origins in his articles (as in his column "The Berbers" in the Dutch literary magazine Passionate Magazine ).
