The Vltava canal Vraňany - Hořín ( Czech Laterální plavební kanál Mělník – Vraňany ) is a side canal for shipping in the area of the mouth of the Vltava into the Elbe . It is located southwest of the central Bohemian town of Mělník in the Czech Republic , runs parallel to the Vltava and is ten kilometers long.

Lock at Hořín

The canal was built from 1902 to 1905. In addition to the piercing and the construction of the bank reinforcement , the construction of the Vraňany weir (Vraňanský jez) with a boat lane at the beginning of the canal was necessary. A small hydropower plant with a horizontally mounted Kaplan turbine was built on the weir from 2004 to 2006 and has an installed peak output of 2.75 MW. Eight bridges were built over the canal at the beginning of the 20th century.

The most important building and technical monument is the Hořín lock, a two-chamber lock with a height difference of more than eight meters.

The lock divides the canal into an upper and lower reaches. The upper course is 18 to 36 m wide, 6 km long and 2.4–3 m deep. There are four turning points. At the beginning of the canal, 12 meter wide flood protection gates have been built. The shipping traffic in the canal runs in the facility system, with a traffic light system and a passing point in Lužec nad Vltavou . The upper reaches are also used for long-distance rowing . The lower reaches between Hořín and Mělník má is 18 to 40 m wide and more than 2.5 m deep.

The Vltava cycle path leads through the Hořín lock.
