A moliceiro is a type of Portuguese boat with a flat bottom.

The boat type is named after the Portuguese word moliço , which describes aquatic plants harvested for use in agriculture . The type of boat was in bays and lagoons , the Portuguese coast, for example in the areas around Porto and Aveiro used seaweed and kelp to collect it as fertilizer was spread on the fields. But it was also used in fishing .

The typical Moliceiros are about 7.5 meters long, 1.8 meters wide and have a draft of about 0.6 meters. Larger moliceiros can also be a little longer than 15 meters and carry around 5 t of cargo. The Moliceiros have a mast with a spritsail . They do not have a keel , but have a high gooseneck-shaped bow . The towering stern at the bow is brightly painted. The crew usually consists of two men who provide the propulsion by pinning with four to six meter long poles when there is no wind or seaweed is being harvested.

Moliceiros were not only used to collect aquatic plants, but also to transport (wine) barrels and agricultural products. Moliceiros mainly sail on the Tagus and Douro rivers , but also on other Portuguese rivers and canals.
