The Moltke linden ( Tilia × moltkei ) is a deciduous tree from the genus of the linden ( Tilia ) in the family of the mallow family (Malvaceae). This linden species is a hybrid of the American lime tree ( Tilia americana ) with the silver lime tree ( Tilia tomentosa 'Petiolaris' or Tilia petiolaris ) that was created at the Späth tree nursery in Berlin before 1880 ; the latter is possibly a cultivated form of the silver linden ( Tilia tomentosa ).

description

The Moltke linden is a deciduous tree that forms a loose treetop .

The young twigs are bare or only slightly hairy. The leaves are round to ovate and up to 25 by 15 cm in size. The leaves are similar to those of the American linden , but in contrast to this, they are densely gray haired on the underside and on the petiole and dark green on the upper side.

distribution

This hybrid is rarely planted as a park tree in Germany .

Surname

The hybrid is named after Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke .
