Mon Alliée (The Best in Me) (German: "My allies (The best in me)") is a pop song with English and French lyrics. It was written by Peter Boström, Thomas G: son , John Lundvik , Amir Haddad , Léa Ivanne and Tom Leeb . The latter sings the title and should have been with France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

background

France 2 announced in January 2020 that Tom Leeb would represent France at the next Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. In contrast to previous years, the broadcaster waived a public preliminary decision. The title was selected from 100 submissions.

The song was presented on February 16, during which Leeb sang the song on the Eiffel Tower with a view of the Mars Field .

Originally under the name The Best in Me , Leeb announced in March 2020 a new version of the title, which should contain less English text and the title Mon Alliée .

Content

Alexandra Redde-Amiel, head of the French delegation, describes the title as “modern and universal”. The lyrics are bilingual. The chorus is sung entirely in English while the stanzas are French. Only the last lines of the second stanza are also in English. According to Leeb, the original text was written by John Lundvik. He works on the French text with Amir Haddad. For example, they wrote a text that sounds as fluid in French as it does in English.

reception

During a committee meeting, Franck Riester replied to Jacques Krabal's question that the song's English refrain had hurt his ears. However, he stressed that this was a free decision by the French broadcaster. A short time later, Riester threatened to force the television station to select a completely French-language song in the future. If in doubt you have to lose, but in a competition like the Eurovision Song Contest you should uphold your language and be proud of it.

André Vallini ( PS ) was also shocked that 80% of the text was English. If you represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest, you have to sing in French.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

As part of the so-called "Big Five", France would have qualified directly for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest, which was scheduled for May 16, 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.
