Mona Nemer , CM CQ (* 1957 in Beirut ) is a Canadian molecular biologist of Lebanese origin. She has been with the University of Ottawa since 2006 , where she served as Vice President until 2017 before she was named the Canadian government's new Chief Science Advisor . Her scientific focus is on the molecular biological and genetic research of the heart , for example congenital heart defects .

Career

Mona Nemer grew up in Lebanon on, but went due to the Lebanese civil war to the Wichita State University in the United States where he acquired in 1977 the Bachelor in chemistry . She then moved to the Canadian McGill University , where he was in 1982 in organic chemistry under Kelvin Ogilvie for Ph.D. PhD . She worked as a post-doc at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (IRCM) at the University of Montreal . There she was promoted to professor and headed the department of the IRCM that dealt with cardiac genetics . She also took on her first positions as a functionary , for example as Director of Academic Affairs and Executive Director of Planning and Development at the IRCM.

Scientific work

Nemer is primarily concerned with the molecular biology and genetics of the heart , both with the physiology and with the pathogenesis of heart failure or congenital heart defects . For example, she identified genes that are involved in the regulation or development of ventricular hypertrophy . Her research also helped develop diagnostic tests for genetic defects that lead to congenital heart defects. So far she has published almost 250 scientific articles, including in Nature .

Honors

Nemer has received numerous prizes for her work to date and is a member of several scientific specialist and honorary societies, including the Royal Society of Canada (2001), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2016) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2017) . She received an honorary doctorate from the École normal supérieure de Lyon (2009) and the University of Oulu (2013) and received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
