The ships of the Mondriaan class , including the Blue Star M class , were among the world's largest container ships when they were commissioned in 2004 . It consumes 245 t of fuel per day, the cruising speed is 24.5 knots. Fully loaded, the ship carries 8,400 containers, 65,000 to 70,000 tons of freight.
history
The series was delivered from December 2004 to 2007 in an edition of eight ships by the Japanese shipyard Ishikajima-Harima Heavy Industries in Kure . The client for the series was the Hamburg- based shipping company Blue Star , at that time a subsidiary of Royal P&O Nedlloyd , belonging to the Maersk Group since 2005 and part of the Komrowski shipping company since 2009 , where the ships are still in service today. All ships of the class are used in liner services between Europe and East Asia.
technology
The M-class ships are among the Post-Panamax container ships and have a slot capacity of 8450 TEU (6105 TEU / homogeneous 14 tons) and 700 reefer container connections. The ships classified by Germanischer Lloyd can stow 17 containers transversely and a total of 13 layers on top of each other. The common rail main engines used were among the most powerful diesel engines on the market at the time. The engine delivers 61,900 kW, the average fuel consumption is 245 t / day, approx. 2 nautical miles per ton. Every 8 weeks, 8,500 tons of fuel are refueled. The bin cost $ 300 in 2006, $ 3 million every 8 weeks.
The ship's electrical system is a medium-voltage network with 6600 V (low voltage 450 V) and is supplied by 4 diesel generators with 4585 kVA each, an emergency diesel generator with around 400 kVA is provided for emergency operation.
The bridge is designed according to the Rational Ship Design (RSD) of Germanischer Lloyd as a ship control center for one-man operation.
Incidents
In spring 2006, P&O Nedlloyd Mondriaan lost 58 and 50 containers in quick succession due to bad weather.
The ships
Eight structurally identical ships of the series were launched:
