Monica Culen (2017)

Monica Culen (born February 10, 1949 in Vienna ) is an Austrian entrepreneur and philanthropist. Together with Giora Seeliger, she founded Rote Nasen in Austria in 1994 and is now CEO of Red Noses Clowndoctors International.

Life

Monica Culen comes from the Fischer-Pochtler industrial family. She is the daughter of Marietta Fischer Pochtler and Hannes Folter. Culen grew up in an entrepreneurial family with many siblings. Her brother, Christian Pochtler, is now the managing director and owner of Pochtler Management GmbH and the iSi Group .

In 1972, Monica Culen, the youngest head hostess at the Olympic Games in Munich, was given responsibility for 80 hostesses in the basketball hall.

During the academic year 1974–1975 she then worked as a public relations assistant at the Institut Europeen d'Administration des Affairs (INSEAD) at Fontainebleau in France.

Shortly after the establishment of the OPEC FUND for International Development, she was appointed PR & Protocol Officer in 1976 and was among other things responsible for the organization of the ministerial conferences in Vienna, Africa and South America.

Health clowning

In 1990 she developed a concept for the use of health clowns and co-founded the first clown organization in Europe. In 1994, together with Giora Seeliger , she founded the Rote Nasen Clowndoctors Austria association, where leading quality standards and extended areas of application were developed, and was its managing director until the end of 2011. Since then she has taken over the chairmanship of the board.

In 2003, Culen also founded the umbrella organization “Red Noses Clowndoctors International” and still heads the entire group today. Since 1996 she has built up further “red noses” organizations in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia, New Zealand, Croatia, Lithuania, Poland and in the Palestinian autonomous regions. There are also international missions for refugees in Europe and the Middle East or worldwide in disaster areas.

In 2004 she took over the chairmanship of the Austrian Fundraising Association (FVA).

In 2008, Culen received the silver medal for services to the Republic of Austria for her social commitment.

In 2011, with the help of Monica Culen, the European Federation of Hospital Clown Organizations (EFHCO) was founded, which defines clear quality criteria with the aim of supporting and guaranteeing the professionalization of the clown organizations and certifying the profession.

She has lectured in Europe for the Fundraising School, University of Indiana (USA) and lectured internationally on humor, non-profit management and fundraising. From 2002 to 2008 she developed and directed the 1st Austrian Fundraising College.
