Monica Heller

Monica Heller (born June 30, 1955 ) is a Canadian linguist who deals with linguistic anthropology . Her research focuses on the role of language in the formation of social differentiation and social inequality within the economy . She is mainly looking at the Francophone part of Canada .

Life

Heller studied sociology and anthropology at Swarthmore College , a private college in Swarthmore , Pennsylvania , and received a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) there in 1976 . She then studied linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley , where she received a Master of Arts degree in 1978 and a Ph.D. in 1982. received. She then worked at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto , where she now teaches as a professor.

In 1997 she was visiting professor at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Free University of Berlin . Heller has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since 2005 . From 2007 to 2012 she was Associate Editor of the Journal of Sociolinguistics . Heller has been a member of the Comité de suivi de la situation linguistique des Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) since 2009 . The OQLF is a public organization under the Québec Ministry of Culture . From 2011 to 2013 she was Vice-President and President-Elect of the American Anthropological Association . From 2013 to 2015 she was president of the American Anthropological Association. She previously served on the Executive Board of the American Anthropological Association from 2005 to 2008 .
