Monika Retschy (born December 5, 1991 in Munich ) is a German sport climber who specialized in bouldering . In 2013 she won the German championship for the first time. Unlike many pure indoor climbers of her generation, she is regularly active on the rock and reaches levels of difficulty up to 8a .

Athletic performance

Monika Retschy climbed for the Munich and Oberland section of the German Alpine Club , of whose national team she was a member.

Retschy first climbed in 2002 and in 2003 she started bouldering in climbing halls . In 2004 she became a founding member of the first competition team of the Alpine Club in Munich and in 2006 she was appointed to the Bayern team. As a member of the youth national team, she was invited to the international Boulderworldcup in Munich for the first time in 2010. From 2012 to 2017 she climbed in the national team and took part in all competitions of the World Cup and in her first climbing world championship.

In 2007 she finished 8th in her first national adult competition at the Boulder Cup in Munich. In 2009, 2011 and 2012 she was German runner-up. In 2013 she won the overall ranking of the German Boulder Cup for the first time and became German champion. Internationally, she made it to the final of a World Cup for the first time in her second year of competition in 2013 and temporarily climbed into the top 10 of the world rankings. She finished the 2013 World Cup season in 11th place. At the 2013 European Bouldering Championships, she reached fourth place. She finished the 2014 World Climbing Championships in her hometown of Munich in 7th place, the 2014 World Cup season in 11th place in the world rankings. In 2015 she reached 4th place at the European Bouldering Championships in Innsbruck .

In 2016 she took 6th place at the Bouldering World Cup in Chongqing . At the World Cup in Navi Mumbai she reached second place, which together was enough for fifth place in the overall World Cup ranking. In addition, she became German bouldering champion for the second time since 2013.

In August 2017 she announced her retirement from competitive sport at the Boulder World Cup in Munich.

Retschy has a bachelor's degree in sports science and is currently studying sports management in the master's program. She is a trainer for young climbers at the Alpine Club in Munich. After the end of her active career, she concentrates on both of these activities.
