Moniliella is a genus of smut fungi with currently nine species described. They are the only representatives of the order of the Moniliellales and the class of Moniliellomycetes
features
The colonies are smooth and velvety from grayish to olive black in color. They grow like yeast . The budding cells are ellipsoidal and form at the end of real hyphae , which are divided with arthroconidia , a chain of short cylindrical spores. Pseudohyphae and chlamydospores may be present. The cell walls are multilayered. The hyphal septa usually have dolipores with an arch of endoplasmic reticulum , but micropore-like structures can also be present. Most species can ferment sugar.
Moniliella react positively to staining with Diazonium Blue B and to urea . The coenzyme Q -9 is present. Xylose and fucose in whole cell hydrolysates ( English whole cell hydrolyzate ) No.
Way of life
Species of the Moniliellomycetes live on fatty substrates, honey, pollen, but also on human sputum or spoiled food and on substrates with low water activity . Some species such as Moniliella fonsecae have been found on tropical flowers.
Systematics
The genus was first described by Stolk & Dakin in 1966 . In 1967 the genus Trichosporonoides was described by Haskins and Spencer . After several authors suspected the synonymity of the two genera, Rosa and coworkers put all described species in the genus Moliniella . The systematic status of the genus was unclear for a long time, and it was not until 2014 that it was described by QM Wang , FY Bai & Boekhout as an independent class of smut fungi with only one order and family. The type species of the genus is Moniliella fonsecae .
