Monk in Copenhagen is a posthumously released album by Thelonious Monk . The recordings, which were made as part of the Monk Quartet's European tour at the Odd Fellow Palæet in Copenhagen on May 16, 1961, were released as a compact disc in 1996 by Storyville Records .

background

In the spring of 1961 Thelonious Monk toured with his quartet, consisting of Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone), bassist John Ore (who had come to the band for Butch Warren ) and Frankie Dunlop on drums. The group has performed in several European cities, including the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam on April 15, Olympia in Paris on April 18, Teatro Lirico, Milan on April 21, Casino, Bern on May 10, Stockholm on May 16 ( live in Stockholm 1961 ) and finally in Copenhagen on May 17, 1961. This concert was recorded by Danish radio. The recordings contain nine compositions by Monk and a piano solo by Monk based on the " Body and Soul " standard .

In the days that followed, the Monk Quartet performed in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam (May 20) and at the Deutsches Jazz Salon in West Berlin on May 22, 1961. The recordings from Paris and Milan appeared in the 1960s Riverside Records , the label to which Monk was still under contract until 1962, on the albums Two Hours with Thelonious , In Italy and Monk in France .

Almost three years later, on March 5, 1963, Monk performed again in the Odd Fellow concert hall in Copenhagen; this concert was also recorded by the Danish radio. The recordings appeared on the album Mønk (Gearbox) in 2018 .

reception

Steve Loewy gave the album four stars in Allmusic, writing, “The advantage of recording live is that the quartet can unfold so the solos are more developed and the individual tracks are generally longer than studio versions of the same tracks . The total recording time is also generous, so that while this recording is not particularly distinguishable from others, it is still a good example of Monk's work with his usual quartet. Tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse is in good shape, and bassist John Ore and drummer Frankie Dunlop are very supportive. "Monk's solo version of" Body and Soul "is characteristically attractive, quirky and, although short, arguably the album's highlight. While this recording is hardly indispensable, the author sums it up as an excellent work by the artist and a solid addition to his discography.
