Live in Stockholm 1961 is an album by Thelonious Monk . The recordings, which were made in the Stockholm Konserthuset on May 16, 1961, were released in 1987 as a double album on Dragon Records and in Japan as a compact disc on DIW Records .

In the spring of 1961 Thelonious Monk toured with his quartet, consisting of Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone), bassist John Ore (who had come to the band for Butch Warren ) and Frankie Dunlop on drums. The group performed in several European cities, including the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam on April 15th, Olympia in Paris on April 18th, Teatro Lirico, Milan on April 21st, Casino, Bern on May 10th and finally on April 16th May 1961 in Stockholm. This concert was recorded by the Swedish radio. The recordings contain ten compositions by Monk, the standard “ I'm Getting Sentimental Over You ” and two short piano solos by Monk, “Just a Gigolo” and “ Body and Soul ”.

In the following days, the Monk Quartet performed in Copenhagen (May 17th, published in 1996 on Monk in Copenhagen ), again in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam (May 20th) and at the Deutsches Jazz Salon in West Berlin on May 22nd 1961. The recordings from Paris and Milan appeared in the 1960s on Riverside's albums Two Hours with Thelonious , In Italy and Monk in France .

Scott Yanow awarded the album three stars in Allmusic, writing: “As with the other European Monk recordings on the tour, the solos of bassist John Ore and drummer Frankie Dunlop are off the shelf, but Monk and tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse are in excellent shape . "
