Thelonious Monk Nonet Live in Paris 1967 is a posthumous album by Thelonious Monk . It contains the recordings that were made in Paris' Salle Pleyel on November 3, 1967 as part of a European tour. They were released in 1988, initially as an LP with five tracks at France's Concert; The recordings were also published in an expanded form on Charly ( The Nonet - Live! ) and Thelonious Records ( "Live in Paris" Vol. 3 ).
background
Monk toured Europe in 1967 with both a quartet and an extended cast; so he appeared on October 28, 1967 with Clark Terry , Ray Copeland , Jimmy Cleveland , Phil Woods , Johnny Griffin , Charlie Rouse and his rhythm section from Larry Gales and Ben Riley in Rotterdam. However, the winds did not appear consistently as a nonet, but complemented Monk's regular quartet in different ways for individual titles. After an appearance in Stockholm on October 31st, which was partially recorded by Columbia, the guest appearance in the Salle Pleyel in Paris followed. The wind players Clark Terry, Jimmy Cleveland and Phil Woods can be heard in Paris on "Ruby My Dear", "Oska T", "Evidence" and "Blue Monk", while Ray Copeland can be heard on all titles.
After further concerts in Berlin and Mainz, as well as with his quartet in Paris, Monk returned to the USA and began studio recordings for the Columbia album Underground on December 14, 1967. ' -

reception
Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 (out of five) stars in Allmusic, writing, “Monk had only recorded twice with this large group before, which makes this rare recording a historical curiosity. Even more important is that the music (with six of his original compositions) is excellent. ”Also in Allmusic, Ken Dryden noted,“ The dissonant ensemble passages and spirited solos in the extended structure of 'Oska T.', Woods' playfulness amid 'Evidence' and Terry's brilliant muffled solo during a rather abbreviated 'Blue Monk' are the highlights of this concert.
