The Montée de la Grande-Côte (also: Montée de la Grand'Côte ) is a street in the 1st arrondissement of Lyon , which connects the Terreaux district with the La Croix-Rousse plateau .

Origin of name

In the Middle Ages it was customary to name the streets according to their function or location. Because of the steep ascent of the road, the name "Montée de la Grande-Côte" ( roughly German  : ascent to the steep hill ) became established. For a while the spelling ... de la Grand'Côte was also used .

history

In the Middle Ages this road was still a dirt road, lined with fields and vineyards. From the 16th century it became an important connection road from the north to the Presqu'île from Porte Saint-Sébastien or from La Croix-Rousse ; settlement along the way began. Magnificent buildings with domed windows are evidence of that time. On the rest of the hill, development did not begin until the 17th century.

While the rest of the slope and La Croix-Rousse were mainly populated by religious congregations, numerous silk weavers ( French Canuts ) have already settled on the Grand'Côte . In 1788 there are 705 weaving mills . The number of branches increased steadily with the settlement.

The Grand'Côte thus became the main artery for the workers who went to Lyon in the Capucins quarter (The traders' quarter and the condition des soies ). This road played a role especially during the silk weavers' uprising in 1831.

From 1854 to 1930, the Montée de la Grande Côte merged with the Rue des Pierres Plantées.

In the last decades of the 20th century, a policy of urban renewal destroyed the upper part of the slope and the adjacent neighborhoods. There was thus a visible gap in the settlement image.

Some parts have become pedestrian zones. The higher section was converted: stairs, gardens and terraces offer a panoramic view of Lyon .

Only the part between Rue des Tables Claudiennes and Rue Burdeau has retained its original character.

First French consumer cooperative

At the beginning of the Montée de la Grande-Côte (house number 95) you will discover the following sign: "Ici fut fondée en 1835 par Michel Derrion et Joseph Reynier la première coopérative française de consommation Le commerce véridique et social ". In fact, there was a “Konsum” ( grocery store ) here in 1835 , well before the Rochdale Movement in England.

La Pantoufle de Berliet

In 1895, Marius Berliet assembled his first car on the family's estate in La Croix-Rousse , the Pantoufle . The attempt started on the Montée de la Grande-Côte, but ended in the window of a delicatessen.
